Wohlers Family History
From humble beginnings as a small antique and giftware shop, Wohlers has emerged as a unique lifestyle store and the leading provider of quality, value for money Mahogany furniture in Australia.
A commitment to family values, together with a passion for creating home environments to support individual lifestyles, has driven the development of Wohlers.
Husband and wife, Daryl and Marilyn Wohlers started the Barossa shop in the main street of Tanunda in 1988. Their children Paul, James and Rachel grew up in the business and the whole family has worked together to create a successful and rapidly expanding lifestyle store that offers a wide range of creative, quality homeware and furniture solutions.
Since inception Wohlers has been renowned as offering unique merchandise. In the past the original shopfront overflowed with an interesting and diverse mix of product that delighted customers, from the largest collection of antique rose glassware in the world to ceramic giftware and antique timber furniture.
Recognising an increasing demand for antique furniture but facing rising costs and limited availability, the Wohlers family identified a need for good quality, affordable, traditional antique style timber furniture. Changing their business focus from antiques and collectables, Paul and James’ cabinet making skills came to the fore as they designed and developed a creative range of traditional solid mahogany furniture that met customer needs.
Quality does separate Wohlers from its competitors. Investment in an overseas manufacturing plant has ensured that all product developed for the business meets Wohlers’ strict quality control measures and meets design guidelines. Long-term partnerships with manufacturers with a similar corporate philosophy and commitment to superior product has been key to the success of the business.
The range and accessibility of timber furniture on offer at Wohlers is second to none. With the facilities to ship anywhere in the world, the amazing selection of craftsman made solid Mahogany furniture is joined by an equally large selection of casual furniture from Teak, Oak and Pine timbers, many designed by James.
Creating a home is central to the Wohlers philosophy. This is not only reflected in the timber furniture available but also the ever-changing array of homewares carefully selected by Marilyn and Rachel to support and enhance customer lifestyles.
Wohlers has grown from a small storefront in Tanunda to an iconic building and retail store, operating 4,000 square metres of showroom. It is now a destination in its own right and attracts visitors from around the globe.
The ‘never give up’ attitude of the Wohlers family has meant that they have faced the challenges of running a small regionally-based business head on, learned from their mistakes and have grown the business to become one of the largest complete home furnishing stores in South Australia and the leading supplier of Mahogany furniture nationally.
Wohlers is committed to the sustainability of the Barossa region and its preservation as an internationally recognised destination. Daryl and James are active participants on the local business committee and the company employs 60+ staff.
It is committed to providing the highest level of customer service, based on traditional values where customers are valued as friends. Staff are dedicated to working with customers to help them create a home environment tailored to their lifestyle. Product development concentrates on traditional design combined with a practical approach to reflect societal trends.
The Wohlers family sees the future as an exciting period where the business will continue to grow to meet the demands and needs of customers. Staff will be empowered to grow with, develop and eventually manage the business.
